A Gentle Winter Home Refresh: Resetting Rhythms, Not Routines

Winter often carries an unspoken pressure to reset everything at once — our homes, routines, and expectations. But this year, I’m choosing a different approach.

Instead of rushing to pack away Christmas or jump into new systems, I’m focusing on gently resetting our home rhythms. One room. One box. One meaningful decision at a time.

In today’s video, I’m working in our dining room, packing away Christmas decorations that have been quietly waiting for their turn. I also carefully store a Fontanini nativity collection that was gifted to me this year — pieces rich with history, faith, and family tradition.

As I slowly worked on putting this new-to-me, treasured collection away, I couldn’t help but think of my grandmother. She passed last May, and this first holiday season without her presence has been bittersweet. She loved the Nativity, and as we recently discovered, she had many sets of her own. There are so many that each of us grandchildren will eventually be able to choose one for our own homes.

But we’re not quite ready for that just yet. So this year, I cherished this Fontanini collection and thought of her — how much she would have loved that I now have it. And next year, I’ll be honored to add a special Nativity from her home to my collection, continuing the nostalgia and memories woven into our Christmas traditions.

So I worked slowly, honoring my need to sit with memories and emotions with grace. This refresh wasn’t about finishing the whole house. Our hearth room still holds other decorations and the tree — and that’s okay. Home rhythms don’t demand completion; they invite presence.

Winter is a season for slower transitions, reflective moments, and honoring what has been before we move ahead. If you’re feeling behind or hesitant to reset everything at once, let this be your permission to move gently.
