Back-to-School Homemaker Reset: Mom Self-Care Survival Kit ✨

Whew—can you believe it’s that time already? 🚌 Back-to-school season always sneaks up on me. One moment we’re soaking up the last bits of summer and the next, I’m staring at the calendar wondering where the time went. If you’re anything like me, this time of year can feel a little overwhelming… but also like the perfect opportunity for a fresh start.

In this post (and video!), I’m walking you through my Back-to-School Homemaker Reset, which includes everything from planning meals and restocking snacks, to sneaking in some self-care while we’re at it. I’ve even got a free checklist for you that breaks it all down step-by-step—because if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a busy mom, it’s that checklists save lives. 😅

What’s in My Back-to-School Homemaker Reset?

This reset isn’t just about school supplies—though yes, we’re talking about those too! It’s about creating peaceful systems for home, health, and mind so you can feel more present (and less panicked) as the school year kicks off.

Here’s a peek at what’s included in the reset:

1. School Prep Tasks

✔️ Cleaning out last year’s backpack
✔️ Organizing supplies (Tip: Shop school sales in late July and early August for the best deals!)
✔️ Sorting clothes and shoes
✔️ Prepping a shopping list for anything missing

2. Meal Planning + Index Cards

✔️ Plugging rotating meals into my planner
✔️ Updating index cards for school routines & weeknight dinners
✔️ Adding seasonal cards to support the new schedule
✔️ Restocking pantry staples + lunchbox snacks

3. Self-Care Survival Kit

✔️ Jordan Essentials magnesium lotion (a bedtime must!)
✔️ Sleep Stick and Magnesium Spray for better rest
✔️ My go-to calming routines: candles, cozy devotional time, and a clean kitchen

4. Planner Setup & Homemaking Routines

✔️ Filling out my August planner spreads with Jane’s Agenda
✔️ Doing a quick home reset: laundry catch-up, home office reset, cleaning routines
✔️ Brain-dumping all the “don’t forgets” into a safe system

My Secret Weapon: Index Cards 📇

You’ll see in the video how I use index cards as part of my homemaking system—something I picked up from the Sidetracked Home Executives method and made my own! For back-to-school, I like to create a few special cards just for this season:

  • “Backpack Clean Out”
  • “School Calendar Check”
  • “Lunch Packing Routine”
  • “School Night Bedtime Checklist”

You can rotate these in just for August–September and file them away again once your new routines settle in. It’s such a flexible way to keep your mind clear without rewriting lists every year.
