Decluttering Before the Holidays (Fall Home Reset)

As the seasons change and the holidays begin to creep closer, I always find myself craving a fresh start at home. Fall is the perfect time for a home reset—not only does it help us enjoy the cozy season more fully, but it also sets the stage for a calmer, more joyful holiday season.
In today’s post, I’m walking you through my Fall Home Reset—a simple, intentional decluttering routine that helps me prepare both my home and my mindset for the busy months ahead.
🍂 Why Declutter Before the Holidays?
The holiday season is often filled with joy, but let’s be honest—it can also bring extra stress. Between cooking, hosting, shopping, and all the festive activities, the last thing I want to deal with is clutter.
By decluttering before the holidays, you:
- Free up space for seasonal décor and gatherings.
- Make room for incoming gifts (especially helpful if you have kids!).
- Create a calmer environment for yourself and your family.
- Reduce stress so you can actually enjoy the season.
🧹 My Fall Decluttering Focus Areas
Instead of trying to tackle the whole house at once, I choose a few key areas that will make the biggest impact.
- The Kitchen → This is holiday central, so I clear out old pantry items, extra piles, and gadgets I don’t use.
- Living Spaces → I refresh throw blankets, candles, and décor, while tucking away summer items.
- Bedrooms & Closets → Out with the summer clothes, in with the cozy sweaters! I also donate anything we haven’t worn.
- Entryway → A clutter-free entry makes the whole home feel calmer when guests arrive.
- Holiday Storage → Take a peek now so you can pass on what doesn’t excite you and enjoy decorating in the months to come.
- Hidden Storage → We all have those tucked away spots where clutter has been collecting. Moving it out now frees up space (mental & physical) to focus on the season.
✨ A Simple Decluttering Routine
Here’s the rhythm I follow during a fall reset:
- Set the vibe – Light a cozy fall candle, put on inspiring music or a “clean with me” video for some body doubling, and make a mug of tea.
- Pick one area – Don’t overwhelm yourself; start small.
- Set a Timer – Even just 5 minutes can totally shift your mood and the feeling of your home. The Timer keeps me focused and gets me moving, and before I know it, I’ve made real progress and I’m feeling motivated!
- Reset the space – Wipe down surfaces, fold blankets, fluff pillows, sweep or dust; once there is less stuff, it’s easy to freshen up the space.
Small steps add up—and they truly transform the way your home feels going into the holiday season.
