How I Decide What to Do Next Using Index Cards (A Real Mid-Day Reset)

Some days don’t start late — they just get away from us. By the time afternoon rolls around, energy is low, the to-do list feels long, and it’s tempting to either push too hard or give up completely.

In today’s video, I shared a real mid-day check-in using my index card system — not a perfect routine, but a realistic one. Here’s how I use index cards to decide what actually gets done, what gets moved, and how I work with my energy instead of against it.

Why Mid-Day Resets Matter

Mid-day resets help me:

  • Avoid all-or-nothing thinking
  • Stop rewriting long to-do lists
  • Make intentional choices instead of reactive ones

Index cards give me permission to adjust without feeling like I failed.

What I Look at First

When I sit down at my kitchen desk, I don’t ask “What should I do?”
I ask:

  • How much time do I really have?
  • How much energy do I have?
  • What would make the biggest difference right now?

Cards that clearly won’t happen today go right back into the box — no guilt attached.

Letting Momentum Work for Me

One of my favorite things about this system is how it helps me get started. Once I’m moving, I often end up doing more than I planned — not because I forced myself, but because momentum naturally builds.

Even if a task isn’t technically “in the zone” for the week, I’ll sometimes do it anyway and adjust later. There’s always more to do — index cards help me keep that in perspective.

The Goal Isn’t Perfection

I don’t use the index card system perfectly, and I don’t think that’s the point.
The goal is:

  • Clarity
  • Progress
  • Peace at the end of the day

And most days, that’s exactly what it gives me.
