Why I Stopped Using Complicated Planning Systems

Simple Planning That Actually Works for Real Life
For a long time, I thought the answer was finding the perfect planner.
The perfect layout.
The perfect routine.
The perfect system.
I believed that if I could just organize things the right way, everything would finally feel easier—my home, my work, my routines, my goals, all of it.
But instead, I found myself doing something I know so many women can relate to:
Starting over.
Again.
And again.
Rewriting lists.
Changing planner inserts.
Reorganizing systems.
Trying to make complicated planning routines fit into a very real, very full life.
And honestly?
It was exhausting.
Eventually, I realized I didn’t need a better complicated planning system.
I needed a simpler one.

When Planning Becomes Another Job
I think a lot of us fall into the trap of believing that planning is productivity.
But sometimes, we’re not actually getting more done—we’re just managing the system itself.
Too many planners.
Too many lists.
Too many places to write things down.
Too many “perfect routines” we feel like we should be following.
Instead of helping, it creates more mental clutter.
As a wife, mom, homemaker, working outside the home in accounting, running my business, and trying to build new projects like my Index Card Course and printables… I needed something realistic.
Not another complicated system to maintain.
I needed peace.
What Changed for Me
The biggest shift happened when I realized this:
Planning should support your life.
It should not become another job.
That changed everything.
Instead of focusing on perfect systems, I started focusing on repeatable rhythms.
Simple things like:
- weekly priorities
- realistic homemaking routines
- project planning that actually moves things forward
- monthly resets that help me refocus
- and systems I can trust when life gets busy
This is where my Index Card System became so powerful.
Because instead of trying to keep everything in my head—or buried inside a complicated planner setup—I created simple repeatable systems I could actually rely on.
Not perfect.
Just consistent.
And honestly, that matters so much more.
How I Plan Now
I still love my planner.
I use my Jane’s Agenda system every single day, and I truly enjoy the process of planning.
But I use it very differently now.
It’s no longer about trying to manage every single detail perfectly.
It’s about clarity.
I ask myself:
What matters most this week?
What needs my attention today?
What routines help my home run more peacefully?
What projects actually need focused time?
That’s it.
I keep coming back to simple systems:
- my weekly rhythm
- project notes
- monthly planner resets
- my index cards
- weekly planning pages
- routines that repeat instead of routines I constantly restart
That shift has made planning feel supportive instead of stressful.
And honestly, that’s the goal.
Simpler Is Not Lesser
I think sometimes we assume that “simple” means we’re not doing enough.
That if our planner isn’t packed with complicated routines and detailed systems, we must be missing something.
But I’ve learned the opposite.
Simpler is often stronger.
The best planning system is not the prettiest one.
It’s not the trendiest one.
It’s not the one with the most inserts.
It’s the one you will actually use.
The one that helps your real life run better.
The one that creates peace instead of pressure.
That’s the system worth keeping.
The Season I’m In Right Now
Right now, I’m in a season where I’m working hard on two big projects:
Project A → My Index Card Course
Project B → My Index Card Printables
These are things I care deeply about.
They matter.
And I know I need systems that support deep work—not systems that distract me from it.
That’s why simple planning matters so much right now.
Because clarity creates momentum.
And momentum matters when you’re building something meaningful.
Final Thoughts
The shift I’ve been making this year isn’t really about planners.
It’s about building systems that support the life I actually want to live.
Peaceful.
Intentional.
Sustainable.
Not perfect.
Just better.
And honestly, that’s what I want for this community too.
If your planner has started to feel more stressful than helpful, I hope this reminds you:
You do not need a more complicated system.
You probably need a simpler one.
And simpler can change everything.
