5 Things I’m Doing Now to Make the Holidays More Peaceful

The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us. One minute we’re enjoying the changing leaves and cooler weather, and the next we’re thinking about Thanksgiving, Christmas gifts, decorating, baking, family gatherings, and all the little details that make this time of year feel special.

And sometimes, before the season has even begun, we’re already overwhelmed.

I’ve been thinking about how I want the holidays to feel this year. I don’t want to spend the whole season rushing from one task to another, worrying about what I’ve forgotten or what I haven’t finished. I want to be present for my family and enjoy the moments that make this time of year meaningful.

That doesn’t mean I won’t have things to do. It means I’m trying to approach those things a little differently.

Here are five things I’m doing now to make the holidays more peaceful.

1. I’m Starting Before I Feel Ready

It’s tempting to wait until we have a free afternoon, the perfect plan, or a burst of motivation before we begin preparing for the holidays.

But waiting until everything feels ready can mean that we end up trying to do too much at the last minute.

Instead, I’m giving myself permission to start with whatever small step makes sense today. I don’t need to have the entire holiday plan figured out before I begin.

Maybe it’s looking through the decorations, making a gift list, or thinking about the meals we’ll share. One small step is still progress.

2. I’m Getting Things Out of My Head

When I try to remember every gift idea, errand, recipe, appointment, and household task, it doesn’t take long for my mind to feel crowded.

Writing things down helps me see what I’m actually working with.

I might use my planner, a simple list, or my index cards. The particular tool isn’t nearly as important as having somewhere to capture those thoughts so I don’t have to keep carrying them around in my head.

Once everything is written down, I can decide what needs attention now, what can wait, and what I might not need to do at all.

3. I’m Breaking Big Projects Into Small Steps

Holiday preparations can feel overwhelming when we think about them as one enormous project.

Decorating the house, preparing for guests, getting ready for Christmas, or organizing the gifts can each involve lots of little tasks.

Rather than putting something like “get ready for Christmas” on my list and feeling overwhelmed by it, I’m looking for the next small, doable step.

This is one reason I appreciate simple routines and short work sessions. I can make progress without needing an entire day to get something done.

You don’t have to finish a whole project today. You just need a place to begin.

4. I’m Deciding What Matters to Our Family

It’s easy to feel as though we need to do everything during the holidays.

We might want all the decorations, every favorite recipe, special outings, family traditions, handmade gifts, and a calendar full of meaningful activities.

But we don’t have to fit everything into every year.

I’m reminding myself that our traditions can change as our family and circumstances change. We can choose the things that matter most to us in this season of life and let some other things go.

That isn’t failing to make the holidays special. It’s making thoughtful choices about how we want to spend our time and energy.

5. I’m Leaving Room for Peace

This may be the most important part of my holiday preparation.

I can make lists, organize my planner, and work through tasks one at a time, but I don’t want my plans to become another source of pressure.

I want to leave room for quiet moments, unexpected changes, time with family, and the simple pleasures of the season.

Some things won’t get done. Plans may change. And that’s okay.

My goal isn’t to create a perfect holiday. It’s to prepare in a way that helps me be more present for the people and moments that matter.

Give Yourself Permission to Take Small Steps

If you’re already feeling overwhelmed by the holidays, you don’t have to figure everything out today.

Choose one small thing you can do now. Write down what’s on your mind. Break a big project into a few smaller tasks. Decide which tradition matters most to your family this year.

And remember that you are allowed to make your holidays simpler.

I’m not trying to make my holidays perfect. I’m trying to make room to actually be present for them.

I hope you can give yourself that same permission this year.
