How to Use Index Cards to Prepare for Christmas One Small Task at a Time

Does the thought of preparing for Christmas sometimes feel like one more big project on an already-full to-do list?

Between everyday homemaking, family responsibilities, work, and all the other things that need our attention, it’s easy to put holiday preparation off until December. Then suddenly we’re trying to do everything at once!

I’ve been working on a simpler way to approach holiday preparation this year. I’m using five index cards within my regular Index Card System to help me incorporate the FlyLady Cruising Through the Holidays missions into my everyday routines.

The goal isn’t to get everything done perfectly. It’s to take small steps now so I can enter the holiday season feeling a little more peaceful and prepared.

What Is FlyLady’s Cruising Through the Holidays?

The FlyLady Cruising Through the Holidays system offers weekday missions beginning the third Monday of October and continuing through the last week of November.

The idea is to work on holiday preparations before December arrives, spreading the tasks out over time rather than trying to squeeze everything into the final weeks before Christmas.

I’ve created a playlist walking through the daily missions so you can follow along and see what each day’s task involves.

This year, I’m also incorporating those missions into my regular household management system with the help of five index cards.

Why I Use Index Cards for Holiday Preparation

I love having a planner to capture the bigger picture. My holiday planner is where I keep track of gift ideas, lists, plans, and other information I want to reference throughout the season.

But planning and doing are two different things!

Sometimes I can spend plenty of time organizing my plans without actually moving the tasks forward. That’s where my Index Card System helps me.

My index cards give recurring tasks and reminders a place to live outside my planner. They help me remember what needs to be done as I’m moving through my everyday routines, without needing to keep checking my phone or deciding from scratch what to work on.

For holiday preparation, I’ve added a Christmas tab to the back of my regular tickler file. That’s where I keep my five Cruising Through the Holidays mission cards.

My Five Cruising Through the Holidays Cards

I’ve made my original set of five cards by hand. They work just fine as they are, and you don’t need anything fancy to get started.

Each card represents one of the five weekday missions. I can pull the cards out of my Christmas section and file them behind the appropriate weekday tabs for the week I’m working on.

When the week arrives, the cards serve as little nudges to remind me to incorporate holiday preparation into my regular daily activities.

I also like that the cards are right there in my index card box. I don’t have to open my phone and risk getting distracted, or search through a long to-do list to find the next reminder.

How I Fit Holiday Prep Into My Everyday Routine

One of the things I appreciate most about this approach is that holiday preparation doesn’t have to become a separate project that takes over my day.

Instead, I can use the cards to remind me of small tasks that fit into the time and energy I have available.

Some tasks might take only five minutes. Others might take 10 or 15 minutes. The point is to keep making progress without feeling like I need to set aside an entire afternoon to get ready for Christmas.

I can file the cards behind the appropriate weekday tabs ahead of time, so when the week arrives, the reminders are already in place.

My holiday planner helps me see the bigger picture, while my index cards help me take the next small step.

Together, they help me keep the plans organized while actually putting them into practice.

You Don’t Have to Prepare for All of Christmas Today

Here’s the reminder I want to carry with me this holiday season:

You don’t have to get your whole house ready for Christmas this week. You don’t even have to figure out your whole holiday season. Just give yourself one small thing to do today.

I know my to-do list is already long enough. I don’t need holiday preparation to become another source of pressure.

I’d rather take a few small steps along the way than wait until December and feel as though I’m scrambling to catch up.

And if I don’t complete every task, that’s okay, too. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about having helpful reminders that allow me to make progress when I can.

Want Help Putting Your Index Card System Together?

If you’d like to use index cards to organize your own household routines, I’ve created a few resources to help you get started.

You can also begin with a few handwritten cards. You don’t need to have the whole system figured out before you start.

The goal is to build something that serves your home and your life—not to create another system you have to keep up with perfectly.

As we move toward the holidays, I hope you’ll give yourself permission to take things one small step at a time.

May your preparation help you enter the season feeling more peaceful, more settled, and more present with the people you love.

Wishing you a peaceful day, a fresh cup of coffee, and grace for whatever this season holds. 💛

With Gratitude,

Natasha
